Fred L. Schwien directs a team responsible for Boeing’s relationship with the Office of the Secretary of Defense; the Joint Staff; and a number of key defense agencies, to include National Security Agency, Defense Logistics Agency and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. His team is also responsible for Boeing’s engagement with the Department of Homeland Security and all of its components including US Customs and Border Protection, Transportation Security Administration, the US Coast Guard, and FEMA. Lastly, his team is responsible for Boeing’s relationship with both defense and non-defense agencies involved in overseeing the government’s cybersecurity efforts.

Prior to joining Boeing in 2009, Schwien served as the Executive Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from 2005-2009 and the Executive Secretary of the US Department of Commerce from 2002-2005 in the Bush Administration. He was the Deputy Secretary of the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing from 1999-2002 for Governor Bill Graves.

Mr. Schwien graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1979 with a BS in engineering and was commissioned as an infantry officer. He retired from the Army as a lieutenant colonel in 1999.
